Fairhaven's Waldron and Young Buildings nearing completion!
One of Fairhaven’s biggest remodeling projects is nearing completion, and tenants are starting to sign up for the Waldron and Young buildings.
The Waldron Building was built in the 1890s but only the first two floors were ever used. To learn more about the history of the Waldron Building and the Fairhaven Historic District try the City of Bellingham's Historic Tours site.
Ebenal General Construction Inc. took on the enormous task of gutting and remodeling the building, which has taken more than a year. Now both the residential and commercial units are getting finishing touches and are expected to be ready for occupancy in October, said Ginger Pennington, vice president of marketing and sales for the company.
Pennington said they have room for two to four retail tenants in the building. At the sidewalk level, Ebenal is looking for a restaurant business to fill the spot.
An additional feature includes stairs installed at the 12th Street sidewalk to go down to the basement level, which has a walkway for other retail spaces.
The Young Building, a newly constructed mixed-use structure that sits right next to the Waldron, will have six retail spaces facing an alley that connects to nearby Finnegan’s Alley.
To date, there are two signed tenants — Nostalgia, a retro clothing and accessories store, and Aisling Eyewear, which will have a variety of eyeglasses and sunglasses.
Pennington said they hope to get the retail spaces signed and filled this fall and winter but are also mindful about being a landlord in Fairhaven.
“We know these buildings are a big addition to Fairhaven, so we want to be picky about who we sign,” Pennington said. “We want to make sure the retail stores flow with the rest of Fairhaven.”
