Bellingham Washington is a very unique city located in the Northwest corner of Washington  State. Bellingham has some very distinct areas and designated neighborhoods all with their own character and charm. The City of Bellingham has established 23 unique Neighborhoods within the city limits and all of them, except for one or two, have established neighborhood associations as well. Below you will find a complete list of all 23 Bellingham WA Neighborhoods, and a brief description. Follow the link at the beginning of the Neighborhood where you'll find a complete page dedicated to each of Bellingham's Neighborhoods. We did add one more neighborhood with Geneva because of it's over all importance to the area. At the bottom of the page we have also added some more areas in the Urban Growth Areas and near by that we will add full pages for as well.
All of the Bellingham Neighborhood pages and the extra areas below will be upgraded before years end to additionally include complete search engines for each specific neighborhood. Home buyers will then be able to search by neighborhood, homes near schools, and maped based search tools as well. You'll even be able to search by address, zip code, parcel number, and/or advanced search parameters as well.
Alabama Neighborhood - The Alabama Hill neighborhood is perched at the top of the hill for its name sake and is home to Alabama Street, the steep arterial most people take to get to Lake Whatcom from the city center.
Birchwood Neighborhood - The neighborhood is on the northwest side of town and has wide streets and many tree-covered lots. This family-oriented neighborhood boasts large, deep lots - many of which were once small farms on the edge of the city - with single-family homes, apartment complexes, three public schools, a grocery store, The Bellingham Golf and Country Club, numerous shopping centers, a park, churches and ready access to Bellingham Bay.
Columbia Neighborhood - The second oldest neighborhood in Bellingham, the Columbia neighborhood is a quiet, mostly residential haven. Situated on a bluff above Bellingham Bay, the neighborhood boasts several tree-lined streets, turn-of-the-century homes and multiple parks.
Cornwall Park Neighborhood - Cornwall Park neighborhood is nestled in the heart of Bellingham. Cornwall Park is best known for its namesake — a large forested park that is very active and contains a playground, baseball fields, spray water park, wooded trails, hills, horseshoe pits, tennis courts, picnic shelters, and a disc golf course.
Downtown Bellingham - Downtown is growing and going through lots of exciting changes and much more is in the works. The old GP site is being transformed into a whole new waterfront site that will rival many other Puget Sound waterfront and harbor sites.
Edgemoor Neighborhood - The Edgemoor Neighborhood is located on the semi-peninsula in the far southwestern corner of Bellingham, and boasts some of the largest, best-maintained homes and lots in the city. This is truly one of the most sought after addresses in the Bellingham, WA area. Driving through the upscale Edgemoor Neighborhood of Bellingham, one can take in the beauty of the large architectural homes and majestic views of Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands.
Fairhaven Neighborhood - Fairhaven, Washington was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the City of Bellingham. Fairhaven Neighborhood is in the southern part of Bellingham, and borders Bellingham Bay on the west, South Hill Neighborhood on the north, Happy Valley Neighborhood and Western Washington University to the east and Edgemoor Neighborhood to the south. Central is the Fairhaven business district which features a seasonal farmer's market.
Geneva Neighborhood - Geneva is located east of the Whatcom Falls Neighborhood and along the southern shores of Lake Whatcom. Upscale neighborhood with medium to higher priced homes on large lots. Geneva is located just outside Bellingham city limits.
Guide Meridian - Stretching north and west of the Meridian neighborhood, the Guide Meridian neighborhood is an area of major expansion. As Bellingham expands to the north and more large retail chains move in - such as Costco, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart - more and more apartment complexes, condominiums and housing developments have arisen. The area once boasted large family lots, especially along Bakerview Road, but since Bellis Fair Mall opened in 1988, the area has become more commercial, with multiple-family residences being the standard.
Happy Valley - The Happy Valley Neighborhood is diverse with College students and the elderly, families and bachelors, homes and apartment buildings, residential and commercial - this densely populated neighborhood is incredibly diverse.
Lettered Streets - To live in the Lettered Streets neighborhood, it helps to memorize which direction the many one-way streets run. Located in the valley between the Columbia neighborhood and downtown, the Lettered Streets neighborhood was one of the first areas people settled in Bellingham.
Meridian Neighborhood - The Meridian neighborhood, clustered along Meridian Street north of Interstate 5, is the retail center of Bellingham. The neighborhood gained its independence from the Guide Meridian neighborhood in 1995 because of its heavily commercial nature and the fact that it sits at the intersection of the two largest traffic arteries in Bellingham: Interstate 5 and Meridian Street.
Mount Baker - The Mount Baker neighborhood is one of the fastest growing residential areas of Bellingham, offering sweeping views of the city and Bellingham Bay from atop Barkley Boulevard on the north side of town. This large neighborhood covers many commercial developments, including Sunset Square, Barkley Village, and the industrial areas along Hannegan Road, East Bakerview Road and Irongate Road. The area boasts two large grocery stores, several restaurants, a movie theatre, gas stations, banks and a department store, creating the feel of a second downtown.
Puget Neighborhood - If you don't want to leave your neighborhood for anything, Puget may be the place to live. Lakeway Drive splits the neighborhood in half, providing gas stations, Cost Cutter, Fred Meyer, numerous restaurants and other small specialty businesses.
Roosevelt Neighborhood - Roosevelt is a compact neighborhood cut in half by Alabama Street, a busy east-west arterial that connects the city center with Lake Whatcom. On the far north side are newer housing developments, while the rest of the neighborhood north of Alabama Street consists mostly of small houses on small lots. South of Alabama Street are more small single-family homes and apartment complexes.
Samish Neighborhood - The Samish Neighborhood is located in the far south east corner of the city of Bellingham. The residential part of Samish is mostly hilly with some flatter areas mixed in and most enjoy spectacular views. The Samish area is full of resident evergreen trees as well as maples, alder and many other deciduous species. The area enjoys the third largest lake in  Whatcom County with Lake Padden.
Sehome Neighborhood - The Sehome area is located up near Western Washington University and the Sehome Arboretum area.
Silver Beach - The Silver Beach Neighborhood encompasses the entire western end of Lake Whatcom and is located just inside the city limits of Bellingham.
South Neighborhood - The South Neighborhood is one of the larger neighborhoods and is located as you guessed it, in South Bellingham.
South Hill Neighborhood - The Samish Neighborhood is located in the far south east corner of the city of Bellingham. The residential part of Samish is mostly hilly with some flatter areas mixed in and most enjoy spectacular views. The Samish area is full of resident evergreen trees as well as maples, alder and many other deciduous species. The area enjoys the third largest lake in Whatcom County with Lake Padden.
Sunnyland Neighborhood - The Sunnyland Neighborhood is centrally located and is one of Bellingham’s older more established neighborhoods. The neighborhood has a lot of character and rich history thru-out. The mixture includes residential, parks, light commercial and shopping as well.
Western Wash University - Western Washington University, rated as one of the best universities on the west coast, is a vital part of Bellingham, Washington’s fabric. The University campus and the adjoining Sehome Hill Arboretum, a popular urban hiking spot, make up the Western Washington University Neighborhood. The main campus covers 195 acres, including 38 acres in the Sehome Hill Arboretum. The entire Arboretum covers 180 acres. 
Whatcom Falls - Whatcom Falls gets it's name from the park in it's neighborhood. A large part of this neighborhood includes the Whatcom Falls Park. Most of the housing in the area is just south west of the park. Very aesthetic area with all the trees.
York Neighborhood - The York neighborhood is one of my favorite areas of Bellingham. This area is dominated by turn of the century homes. York neighborhood was established in 1888 with most of the homes in this area built between 1890-1920. The architecture of the homes are rich in history, with there sandstone foundations and Victorian era exteriors. York is one of the smallest neighborhoods in size, but is very compact with about 80% of the area consisting of single family homes. |
