Ferndale, Washington located about 7 miles north of Bellingham is one of the fastest growing towns in Whatcom County. Ferndale was started next to the Nooksack River and grew out from that point to 10,500 plus residents today. The town of Ferndale was first settled in the mid 1800's and was officially incorporated on March 19, 1907. Its namesake comes from the ferns that once grew around the original school house in town. The old-timers claim it was originally called Jam because the town was located next to an area on the Nooksack River that was known for logjams. Fortunately a school teacher decided it needed a more picturesque name, and called it Ferndale . Heritage and history is alive in this proud community.
Ferndale celebrates its Scottish heritage in early June during the annual Scottish Highland Games which include bagpipe music, highland dancing and the uniquely Scottish sport of caber tossing. The last weekend of July features the Whatcom County Old Settlers Picnic. This century old celebration has become much more than a picnic and has grown to include country music, dancing, parades and a carnival.
The Hovander Homestead Park is a 1903 vintage farmhouse and interpretive center registered as a National Historic Site. A visit to the interpretive center, milk house, petting zoo and flower gardens provide an interesting display of turn of the century life and a picnic on the banks of the scenic Nooksack River will justify any visitors decision to visit this famous site.
Pioneer Park, site of the Settlers Picnic, and Scottish Highland Games, contains a fascinating display of hand-hewn log buildings constructed from the massive cedar trees that originally covered the landscape. These cabins, which were originally gathered together by the the Old Settlers Society in the 1930's to preserve their heritage, contain many historical exhibits and represent one of the finest collections of log construction in Washington State. The Tennant Lake Natural History Interpretive Center provides a nature walk and boardwalk with a unique opportunity for the visually impaired in that it features a fragrance garden with plants of singular aromas and texture signed in braille.
